A new competition-standard swimming pool will deliver a strategic venue for the sport to develop for years to come, through innovative construction techniques.
Worcester City Council’s new £10.5million pool extension at Perdiswell Leisure Centre is part of a national strategy to support the right facilities in the right areas to get more people participating in sport.
The facility will provide a 25m x 18m eight lane main pool, an 18m x 10m learner pool with moveable floor, and seating for 250 spectators.
Speller Metcalfe is building the pool complex, with roofing executed by Britannia Site Solutions, using 2,300m2 Protan EX-A 1.5mm singly ply polymer membrane adhered to the aluminium and concrete roof decks.
Britannia Site Solutions’ director Nick Coles explained: “Single ply was specified for the roof covering; we chose to use an adhered system for aesthetics, as the deck is exposed internally over the pool and the ‘dry’ spectator area.”
Protan EX-A is a polyester reinforced membrane with a laminated fleece underside, and is purpose-developed as an adhered system for environments with high humidity. All Protan roofing membranes are fully BBA certified, and have been developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°.
The membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.
