Formerly knows as the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the building underwent renovation by architecture and interior design company, Universal Design Studio, who created an active street frontage and a welcoming lobby.
Designed to reflect the brick dominated buildings in the surrounding area, the façade steps, which were previously distanced from the street, have been incorporated into areas to create an outdoor terrace, whilst a compresses entrance portal has made way for a series of brick rooms.
A dark, rich coloured Ketley Blue was specified for the exterior to create a contemporary look, whilst approximately 20,000 full facing bricks and 11,000 brick specials were used on soffits and upstands with a mix of bonds.
Brick slips were used as bonding for prefabricated panels for the ceiling of the entrance to eliminate the need for cutting, and ribbed tactile pavers were also used at the top of the stairs to assist the visually impaired.
The Ace Hotel project, worked on by brickwork contractor Winchmore Brickwork, proved to be a huge hit with judges, the owners and guests who commented on the high quality refurbishment and craftsmanship.
