ROCKWOOL creates the ideal school environment in Luton

  • 28 Jul 2017

ROCKWOOL flat roof insulation products have been used at Stopsley High School to create an environment with reduced noise disruption.

Stopsley High School in Luton is a mixed comprehensive and community college that educates children from 11 to 16 years old.

The school recently received Government funding, via the Priority School Building Programme. A new school building was built to accommodate 64 new classrooms, a four court sports hall, creative and music spaces and a special needs facility.

Main contractor, Interserve worked with sub-contractor, Briggs Amasco and Acoustic consultant, Arup to deliver a purpose-built and well-insulated school building.

The school required a thermal performance of 0.15 W/m2K and needed to meet the stringent acoustic performance requirements of BB93, in order to achieve a target noise reduction of Rw44Db. In addition, the noise needed to be controlled in high traffic areas of the school.

Approximately 600m2 of the 150mm ROCKWOOL HARDROCK Multi-Fix boards were adhesively applied on the roof of the building. ROCKWOOL HARDROCK Multi-Fix Underlay was placed across the roof, followed by the HARDROCK Multi-Fix roof boards providing a non-combustible surface that was ideal for the application of the torch applied bitumen waterproofing system.

Tony Sutton, Contracts Manager at Briggs Amasco comments, “The ROCKWOOL products act as an excellent sound deadening layer, which helped in controlling the high level of noise coming from the sports and the music halls of the school. The products also deliver optimum levels of thermal and acoustic performance, which helped us achieve the set requirements.”

The thermal, acoustic and fire resistance properties of ROCKWOOL products have helped Stopsley High School to provide an effective teaching and learning environment. Additionally, the excellent fire resistance properties of the ROCKWOOL products provide a high level of fire protection that will last.
