“The package of measures announced by DESNZ (21 November) is a promising step to advance the UK’s decarbonisation goals and encourage the uptake of renewable heating. The additional funding for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is particularly welcome. It will provide crucial support for households to make heat pumps more affordable and boost the number of homeowners making the transition.
“The announced changes to permitted development rights will also make installing a heat pump easier and more flexible. In particular, removing the need the 1 meter requirement from a neighbouring property, allowing two heat pumps in one detached home, and extending the possible size of a heat pump will make heat pumps the right option for many more UK properties.
“Beyond these measures, we also look forward to seeing more on the Future Homes Standard, which should ensure that new build homes are also aligned with net zero objectives.
“Finally, we would welcome an announcement from the government on decoupling the price of electricity from gas. This would help reduce the price of electricity and incentivise electrification, making heat pump running cheaper and electric technologies even more appealing.”
