Schlüter floor movement systems specified for Rolls Royce manufacturing facility

  • 14 Nov 2016

CPMG Architects has specified Schlüter Systems to maintain and control floor movement at the £60 million purpose built research, design, development and manufacturing facility for Aero Engine Controls (AEC), part of the Rolls Royce Group.

The 28,000sqm facility in Solihull, Birmingham has replaced the company’s two existing AEC sites to manufacture engine control systems for a range of applications, including Rolls Royce engines.

Schüter Systems collaborated with BAM Construction and Birmingham Tile & Mosaic Co to supply a number of its products including Schlüter DILEX-AKWS movement joins and Schlüter-DITRA-25 uncoupling matting to prevent the risk of the covering cracking and guarantee a lasting installation.

Schlüter-DILEX movement joints can accommodate approximately 15-20 percent of their movement zone. The pre-formed control joints are available in a wide selection of materials, colours and movement capabilities.

The joints were installed alongside the Schlüter-DITRA 25 uncoupling membrane, designed specifically for tile and natural stone installations. Due to its unique geometry, the membrane allows for the absorption of lateral movement in each direction.

As well as its uncoupling ability to neutralise tensions between surfaces, Schlüter-DITRA 25 prevents movement and debonding and features interconnected air channels to help moisture evaporate. The system is also CE marked for waterproofing.

The system has been used for over 25 years on a variety of worldwide applications.
