Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass has been independently assessed and verified to EN 1096-5, the new European Standard for self-cleaning glass.
Pilkington Activ utilises a microscopic coating with dual action: the coating is activated by daylight, which breaks down dirt and other organic composites. When rainwater hits the glass, the coating enables an even spread of water; the rainwater runs off the glass in a ‘sheet’, removing any dirt as it does so.
The product has been independently tested in Germany by the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (IST). It has also achieved a Class A ranking for durability, in accordance with EN 1096-2, guaranteeing its resilience to abrasion and natural weathering conditions.
Now, after 15 years on the market, the product has been certified to EN 1096-5, the new European Standard for self-cleaning glass. The new standard tests and classifies the performance of products that use hydrophilic and photocatalytic properties to enhance glass cleanliness.
‘EN 1096-5 certification will enable specifiers to differentiate between products with an official self-cleaning performance, and those without,’ comments Andy McDowell, Pilkington UK’s Commercial Director.
‘The standard will also provide peace of mind for homeowners, who can insist on installers supplying self-cleaning glass that passes this latest test. This achievement is testament to the quality and strength of Pilkington’s product offering.’
Pilkington Activ is well-placed to respond to an increased demand for self-cleaning glass across the commercial and domestic markets, reducing the amount of time and money spent on window cleaning.
Considering this, Pilkington is committed to investing in and developing its product range to ensure that it continues to meet customer demands.
