Senior’s products prescribed for refurbishment of Nottingham hospital

  • 18 Mar 2024

Work is progressing well at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, where aluminium fenestration solutions provider Senior Architectural Systems is undertaking one of its largest retrofit contracts to date.

The manufacturer is supplying replacement low U-value aluminium windows as part of wide scale efficiency improvement upgrades to the major hospital.

Working with main contractor Willmott Dixon and specialist contractor Acorn Aluminium, Senior has supplied its SPW600 aluminium system to replace over 18,000 square metres of existing windows across the site.

This includes the replacement of four storeys of two-metre tall single glazed ribbon windows which dominate the hospital’s exterior facade, with the new fenestration installed across office, administrative and public spaces as well as on working wards.

Senior’s popular SPW600 aluminium windows have provided U-values of around 1.3w/m2K, dramatically improving both the look and feel of the building. The thermal-efficiency of Senior’s SPW600 aluminium system has been further enhanced through the use of solar-controlled glazing to reduce the risk of overheating in the summer months.

The ambitious programme is due to complete in late 2024 with the Queens Medical Centre, part of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, remaining operational throughout.

The replacement window and door programme is part of an agreement between Nottingham University Hospital and energy company Eon and is expected to reduce carbon emissions and deliver over £2.8 million of energy savings each year.
