Sika-Trocal provides long-lasting solution to college roof drainage problem

  • 16 May 2016

K&S Construction has specified 4,200m2 of 2mm thick Sika-Trocal S roofing membrane to refurbish a number of roofs at a busy college campus.

MidKent College – one of the largest further education and training providers in the South East – has an estimated 8,500 students enrolled at its Maidstone and Medway campuses.

It was determined that the roofs of five buildings at its Maidstone campus were in need of refurbishment, having reached a state of disrepair due to wear and tear. With water ponding on the roofs, leading to water ingress, a solution was required.

Cold-applied Type S membrane

Sika-Trocal S roofing membrane was specified to minimise the standing water risk and ensure correct falls towards the appropriate outlets and hoppers.

MKC-2K&S Construction achieved this by over-roofing the existing roofs, which consisted of a number of different bases including felt and asphalt. This was carried out during term-time to minimise disruption.

Sika-Trocal’s vapour permeable membrane was mechanically fastened at the perimeters and around penetrations using its laminated metal disc system, which sees the membrane fixed to the roof in a single process.

To improve the buildings’ thermal efficiency, a 120mm thick rigid thermoset insulation was also applied.

Sika-Trocal is BBA-certified to have a life expectancy of up to 30 years. The cold-applied Type S roofing membrane provides a single, comprehensive solution to drainage issues and provides a pleasing uniform aesthetic.
