Single ply vapour membrane extends modular building life

  • 27 Oct 2014

The modular buildings were leaking badly and new roofs were needed. Contractor CC Roofing stripped the original roof and then mechanically fix Protan SE1.2mm single ply vapour permeable membrane to 18mm OSB board.

Balancing cost and potential longevity

Protan single ply vapour permeable membrane was used in refurbishing the roof of the new premises for WC Consulting

Bill Cooper, managing director of WC Consulting: “We looked at various options, but Protan came out the best in balancing cost and potential longevity. The Protan membrane was lightweight and easy for the roofing contractor to use, even on detailing such as the dressed upstands. The new roof should be good for at least 30 years!”.

The Protan SE membrane, manufactured in Norway and available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm sizes, is certified to ? -30° and carries a tensile strength of ?1050 N/50mm. Air leakage is controlled in line with the latest Building Regulations.

A tear resistance of ?210N ensures its performance under extreme wind uplift forces and thermal and structural movement.

Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability for up to 30 years.

Protan roofing solutions are guaranteed for a minimum 10 years, but the company has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation.

A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and variable warranty depending on specification is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
