Stannah Lifts has been named Specialist Contractor of the Year at the Builder & Engineer Awards for its work in the UK’s infrastructure projects at Birmingham New Street and Leeds railway stations.
The award was given based on a significant contracts won for 2017 and recent projects undertaken over the past year. Judges look at how Stannah’s Major Projects and Escalator and Moving Walkway teams co-operated with other contractors; examples of innovation; how relationships were managed with clients, sub-contractors and suppliers; health and safety, and green credentials.
The history of Stannah and its products and services offerings were also considered. As part of the entry process, Stannah were tasked to answer ‘what makes [the company] stand out from the competition?’
In light of winning the award, Stannah published its response (below):
“Since 1867 Stannah has remained a resolutely independent British business. By remaining true to our family values we have been quietly successful, expanding to have operating companies across the UK and all over the world.
At the heart of our work is a strong but simple promise that defines the Stannah position within our industry: ‘always true to our word’. This reflects the way they go about their business. Stannah is a single organisation with many specialities: passenger and platform lifts, goods and service lifts, stairlifts, escalators, moving walkways, bespoke and custom-made lifts and related lift services.
We have been a lift business since day one but commercially we have experienced preconceptions about our engineering heritage and capability due to our high profile stairlift success.
In 2015 our Escalators and Moving Walkways department and Major Projects team completed the supply and installation of escalators and lifts to the Birmingham New Street Regeneration Project (our largest job to date) and Leeds Station Southern Entrance extension (our quickest delivery to date).
Nationwide we deliver our Network Rail maintenance contract, which alone has over 1130 assets, just a part of our 81,000 assets in our national maintenance portfolio.
We are totally focused on winning and delivering projects on time and within budget. We work safely, smartly and fairly.
On the eve of our 150th anniversary, it is time we were recognised for our lift expertise. We have a dedicated workforce that takes pride in the Stannah name and our specialist workforce deserves this award.”
Now in its 13th year, The Builder & Engineer Awards recognises the best products, projects, companies and individuals in the construction industry. This year’s awards took place on the 30th November at Anfield, Liverpool.
