Wetherby Building Systems: County Flats, Aberavon

  • 13 Jun 2023

County Flats in Aberavon are part of large housing association Tai Tarian, with properties across Neath and Port Talbot – Wetherby products feature there…

The fantastic scheme comprises 127 carbon neutral homes, made up of 72 refurbished flats and 55 new apartments.

This project is very unique, as a mix of construction methods feature to achieve the final/desired finish for the build. The project includes retrofitting external wall insulation, traditional new build construction and modular.

Wetherby was at an advantage for this project, as it was able to supply materials for all aspects, while keeping the consistency of the façade. This included matching the facing bricks on the new build with the slips for the retrofit and modular units.

Wetherby ‘High Density Ribbed’ EPS Insulation was installed by main contractor JG Hale Construction onto 25mm timber battens and specified at 180mm thick for the existing buildings to achieve 0.18w/mk2.

The modular units were constructed roughly 15 miles away by sister company SO Modular using 50mm of the Ribbed EPS Insulation, again achieving 0.18 due to the timber frame’s insulation. All systems were finished using Brick Slips and facing bricks in colour ‘Handstruck Valencia Mix’.

This project is also an ongoing scheme with two blocks complete and four more for completion throughout the year.
