A longstanding commitment to ethical and responsible manufacturing has allowed Wienerberger to earn an “Excellent” rated BES 6001 certificate for its UK manufactured bricks, roof tiles and pavers.
BES 6001 (The BRE Global Environmental and Sustainability Standard) outlines a framework for the responsible sourcing of construction products.
This third party assessment considers specific environmental, economic and social impacts to provide recognition for suppliers embracing genuine sustainability.
The past two years has seen Wienerberger encourage its main raw material suppliers to follow best practice and obtain ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications for environmental and quality management.
Wienerberger also demonstrated leadership in resource management and stakeholder engagement, which resulted in the company scoring highly in the assessment and take the rating for its brick, roof tile and paver products from “Good” to “Excellent”.
The BES 6001 certification allows customers to make better informed decisions about selecting sustainable construction materials.
This is because organisations must satisfy a number of requirements relating to supply chain management, energy use, waste management, employment, modern slavery and corporate social responsibility.
BES 6001 certificates can also help maximise points for architects and specifiers looking to achieve high BREEAM scores for their building projects.
Kevin Tolson, Wienerberger’s Commercial Director, commented: “Using responsibly sourced constituent materials to deliver high-quality products to our clients is fundamental to the company’s commitment to ethical business practices.
“Achieving the Excellent rating has been a big undertaking; it has taken input from various teams within the business to meet the challenge of reaching the highest possible rating against the rigorous BES 6001 standard.
“We’re proud to say that this certification means our customers can have confidence in Wienerberger’s commitment to environmental and social sustainability.”
