The benefits of AXEDO inspection chambers

  • 31 May 2019

Inspection chambers are a must for underground drainage systems and AXEDO plastic inspection chambers are rapidly becoming so popular on construction sites.

The reason for this is although concrete has long been the preferred material for these chambers, concrete requires specialised machinery and plenty of time to install.

Where can AXEDO chambers be used?

Concrete manhole chambers are used for man entry inspection to underground drainage systems, but they are also often used for non-man entry inspection due to the depth of access required.

AXEDO can replace these concrete non-man entry chambers and are installable up to 3m in adoptable systems (up to 6m in non-adoptable systems) while being fully compliant with Sewers for Adoption 7, Sewers for Scotland 3 and certified (Kitemarked) to BS EN 13598-2.

Saving time and money

AXEDO inspection chambers offer construction workers a safer, more efficient solution than traditional concrete chambers.

Their lightweight design means specialist equipment is not required to position in place, resulting in quicker and easier installation than their concrete counterparts.

The overall cost is significantly reduced too. For instance, an AXEDO 600 inspection chamber can be installed in less than half the time as a concrete equivalent, and for nearly half the cost as well. In fact, you could save up to £1,000 per chamber.

Safety and strength

The lightweight nature of AXEDO inspection chambers means that the need for heavy concrete and specialist machinery is eliminated, which in turn reduces manual lifting risks and gives added health and safety benefits on site.

But, although it’s lightweight, it retains the necessary strength to withstand heavy loads on the surface. AXEDO can weather a weight of up to 40 tonnes, and strengthening ribs on the underside ensure that pressure from backfill can’t warp the chamber. They are most often used in estate roads, retail parks and other light trafficable areas.

Even better, AXEDO inspection chambers are directly compatible with the next-generation ULTRA3 pipes, making it easy to include inspection chambers as part of a sustainable, environmentally-aware installation (adapters are available for other pipe types).

AXEDO is suitable for non-man entry inspection chambers in both surface and foul water systems, lessening the need for multiple chambers on site. Most water authorities will adopt AXEDO chambers too; check with JDP or your local water authority for full details.

On-site benefits

The convenience and ease of use offered by AXEDO products can deliver huge benefits to a construction project as Evan Pritchard, civil engineers and construction contractors with more than 45 years’ industry experience, discovered when they installed AXEDO inspection chambers at a new school in Wales.

They can also significantly reduce the time it takes to complete a project, which is why AXEDO products were used at Luton Airport to help build a 1,700 space multi-storey short term car park.

Buckingham Group, which was behind the project, were so impressed with the results delivered by AXEDO products that it has already used them on a number of other sites.
