ASSA ABLOY: Where to find expert specification support for green building certifications

  • 10 May 2023

The demand for green certification is growing fast. Dikesh Pattni, from ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, speaks in this Q&A about the expert support it offers to architects, project managers and building investors wanting to learn more about ‘building better’.

Q: Why should a building project team approach ASSA ABLOY for specification advice?

We have vast organisational experience in simplifying some of the most painful processes in a construction project! Ultimately, delivering specification information accurately, transparently and at the right time makes a huge and beneficial impact on costs and outcomes.

We regularly share digitalisation and green building expertise with architects and developers, BIM managers, contractors, distributors and many others. It helps them to deliver their vision faster, better and more cost-effectively. And we deliver all this support and expertise as part of our service.

Interestingly, the return on investment (ROI) from greener building could be financial as well as ethical. Knight Frank have found ‘a positive and significant effect of Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding BREEAM ratings on prime central London office rents — ranging from 3.7% to 12.3% premiums’.

ASSA ABLOY

Q: Why do you offer green building support specifically?

As a company, we are fully committed to our Net Zero journey and we want to help our customers and partners do the same. As an official partner in the World Green Building Council’s Europe Regional Network, part of our mission is to transfer the latest sustainable construction knowledge to the widest possible audience. We work to highlight the environmental, economic and social benefits of green building. We advocate for greater decarbonisation of the construction industry, stricter environmental regulations and more ambitions targets for the sector as a whole.

ASSA ABLOY offers in-depth support for six green building certifications: BREEAM, LEED, Green Star, WELL, DGNB, HQE. A contribution sheet for each scheme is free to download from our regional websites. Each sheet details how multiple ASSA ABLOY products contribute towards credits in the scheme.

But the most important element is our expert specification teams. From doors and door closers to wireless electronic access control, ASSA ABLOY manufactures and supplies products for almost every building and opening. This range gives us uniquely broad-based knowledge about standards and green certifications across a huge range of building features and functions, including lower-impact mobile access control and energy-saving wireless access solutions.

Q: In what ways can your specification teams help customers to ‘build better’?

Not every architecture design studio or property development office has specification expertise. Working with an ASSA ABLOY team adds this skillset. Personalised ASSA ABLOY teams handle specification details on the customer’s behalf, freeing up time for designers and construction teams to focus on their own critical tasks.

One concrete result is that architects can render security and door solutions as soon as possible in their design, so aesthetics and usability are not disrupted by frantic last-minute alterations.

Crucially, our ASSA ABLOY teams are locally based across the EMEIA region. They bring expertise on local issues, standards and certifications — and can even attend in-person project meetings. The unique combination of local and global knowledge offered by ASSA ABLOY has brought cost and project management efficiencies to builds all over the world.

Q: Is there a role for software as well as traditional person-to-person specification support?

Absolutely! ASSA ABLOY Openings Studio™ software has already benefited multiple building projects. Easy to use and to integrate with existing workflows, Openings Studio links architectural design software with databases holding specification data. It can deliver detailed solution specifications directly Revit® and ARCHICAD®.

Instead of Excel spreadsheets and PDF floorplans, Openings Studio coordinates design and specification information together, resulting in fewer errors and less wasted time. For transparency, Openings Studio logs all events and updates designs automatically with a couple of clicks from an authorised project manager.

ASSA ABLOY also has a comprehensive BIM library formatted for seamless integration with any design. Each object in the library has detailed geometry and specifications; many also have additional documentation such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for green building programs.

With software and personalized green building specification support, we help our customers to digitalise with confidence.

ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions offers specification expertise to support projects from a single door to complex new developments. To learn more, download a BIM & Specification brochure.
