Simmer-Inman Construction & Property Consultant was appointed by the University of Edinburgh after its current roof had come to the end of its natural life.
It consulted with the Sarnafil Plus refurbishment team to specify Sika Sarnafil as a replacement.
It was stipulated that the building must remain operational throughout the works to accommodate the students and staff. It was therefore important that the project was finished quickly and efficiently, with minimal disruption.
The refurbishment covered a multitude of trades, and included stripping more than 2000 square meters of the existing copper roof coverings.
Sika Sarnafil’s surveyors conducted a comprehensive roof survey to determine which system was suitable for roof, specifying Sika Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in Patina Green as an acceptable replacement.
Listed Building Consent was obtained and the refurbishment project began.
The extensive roof replacement included a new timber taper fall once the copper roof was lifted, which was then covered with the mechanically fastened Sika Sarnafil system.
To replicate the original copper roof details, the membrane was applied with standing seam profiles.
Main contractor, BriggsAmasco, also had to integrate the new bespoke Sika Sarnafil outlets with existing lead and cast iron drainage system.
The integration of other trades and materials were all managed by us, including slate, lead and Sika Sarnafil products, working together as one, said Raymond Wright of BriggsAmasco.
With the ability to fully coordinate, design and install the roof came greater control and led to a quicker completion of the project, along with increasing the client’s confidence in on-site finishes and weathering.
The refurbishment was finished within budget and with minimum disruption to the students and staff below.
A thorough final inspection as part of the Sarnafil Plus package saw the roof receive a 20-year single point guarantee.
The project picked up the award in the Single Ply Roofing category at the NFRC National Roofing Awards.
