Fossil fuel consumption to be reduced with new plantroom

  • 31 Oct 2014

The plantroom is being built in an effort to reduce fossil fuel consumption

The glazing systems designer and manufacturer has been granted planning permission from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to build a plantroom at its Denaby base which will house a biomass boiler, buffer tanks and a chipper unit.

Over 100 tonnes of waste timber and packaging waste will be chipped and combusted in the unit, with Senior’s 48,000 sq. ft. warehouse being heated by the energy created and the firm expected to make £30,000 per year on the investment under the government’s Feed-In Tariffs scheme.

Twenty-two tonnes of products saved from landfill

Senior is also investing in a waste reducing paint line for its aluminium powder coating service, saving 22 tonnes of products from being sent to landfill each year.

Designed in Switzerland, the new technology will enable Senior’s powder coating usage to be reduced by 20% in the aftermath of the line being installed in January, with waste powder being reused and processes going through faster to make significant cost reductions.

Two Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid electric cars have been ordered for sales representative at Senior and charging points will be installed at bases across the country.

With the plantroom expected to be fully operational by the beginning of 2015, the new improvements will have a positive impact on the environment and on Senior’s carbon footprint.
