ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has supplied a range of its security solutions and doors for the redevelopment of Cheltenham Racecourse ahead of this year’s Open.

The Princess Royal grandstand was refurbished as part of the £45 million redevelopment.

Working in partnership with Kier Construction and Roberts Limerick Architects, the ASSA ABLOY UK Specification team collaborated with the design and construction companies over a 19 month period to deliver an unrivalled redevelopment of the iconic racecourse.

The £45 million development of the landmark racecourse, known as “The Home of Jump Racing”, was officially opened at the beginning of this year’s Open by the Queen.

In addition to The Princess Royal, a five and a half storey grandstand, the project included a refurbished weighing room, a new first aid room and a new crescent walkway providing visitors with improved access to the parade ring.

As the largest development of its type, The Jockey Club has praised the partnership between the contractors, architects and supplies who enabled a full race programme to continue during the project.

Security door specification

The ASSA ABLOY UK Specification team supplied a range of steel external and security doors, in addition to internal timber security doors to allow for safe and unhindered access and flow around the racecourse.

The phased redevelopment required the specification team to consider how the building is used and how its doorsets and scheduling could support and enhance this. It supplied doorsets to the VIP and Royal boxes, as well as the public and services areas, taking into account the different design requirements and atmosphere that needed to be cultivated in each individual area.

David Shields, Specification Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY UK, said: “Cheltenham Racecourse is an iconic venue and investment of this kind is unprecedented in the racing world, so this was a critical project for the team. Kier Construction and Robert Limbricks Architects have a wealth of experience in delivering projects of this nature but this was still a testing venture to work on, as a full racing calendar had to be achieved during the works, making logistics and collaboration across all parties crucial.

Our simplified approach to specification means we’re able to assist architects and design-led contractors in all areas of the development but particularly the areas that they can find burdensome, such as scheduling, which often requires in depth levels of expertise to get right. In addition, the data we were able to provide can assist with whole life costing and certifying the sustainability credentials of a building, as well as the on-going management.”
