Interior design trends to watch out for in 2016

  • 4 Feb 2016

2015 was a fairly impressive year for interior design but 2016 is already shaping up to be competition with a range of stylish themes and practical solutions providing inspiration for homes all over the country.

If you’re planning an up date this year then these are the trends to look out for.

Mismatched kitchens

While previous trends may have been for uniformity, when it comes to your kitchen this year, eclectic is better. Cabinets, in particular, are being used to make a statement with mix and match, mismatched looks that bring together two, or even three, different styles. Go for smooth and textural, plain and patterned or neutral and colour for some serious statement effect.

Exotic themes

This is the year for colourful, inspirational themes with decades such as the 1980s bringing geometric motifs and bold, clashing colors, and the new Brazilian Modern trend pairing sculptural forms with unusual woods. This is balanced by the trend for ‘less is more,’ which will strip back design to raw materials and uncluttered lines.

Metals

Copper continues its domination of home interiors from 2015, bringing an earthy brightness to accents and accessories for 2016. Brass will provide the new metal approach this year, its solid tones and vintage feel appearing on everything from furniture to accessories.

Pastels

Neutrals have long ruled the roost when it comes to interiors but for 2016 colour trends are exploring slightly more exotic shades with a range of pastels coating walls, covering furniture and providing interiors details, such as soft furnishings and features. Dusky, subtle pinks are likely to prove particularly popular but expect sorbet orange, pistachio green, washed out blue and summery violets too.

Hand crafting

In 2016 we can also expect a much longed for move away from throw away culture with trends driving us towards hand crafted accessories, hand made textiles and pieces that have an individual, carefully honed feel. Organic shapes and natural textures will bring spaces to life and bespoke styling will become the choice over generic minimalism.

Smarter homes

From under floor heating throughout the house to installing domestic lift for future proofing purposes, it’s not just about aesthetics when it comes to interiors this year, it’s about smart, tech-driven, practical design too. However, in 2016 tech is subtle and blended to its surroundings, from a home lift in minimalist white to integrated, almost invisible entertainment systems.
