According to Clos-o-Mat, a recent report has revealed that British hospitals and clinics are putting disabled people at risk by not providing appropriate toilet provision.
Entitled Making a Case for Fully Accessible Toilets Within the NHS, the report argues that many toilets within NHS buildings, such as hospitals, have been found to be unsafe.
Hospitals have been deemed the second most inaccessible buildings in the UK, which is a worrying statistic, consdering around 30% of British NSH users are regarded disabled.
It has also been revealed that only 42 of the 206 acute and mental health Trusts have basic Changing Places assisted accessible toilets installed. By failing to ensure the welfare of those that require personal hygiene assistance, these institutions are putting their patients at risk.
To help the NHS Trusts to address this issue, Clos-o-Mat has established several solutions: its white paper, Provision of Changing Places Toilets in Hospitals & the Healthcare Industry, offers unbiased advice on legal requirements.
It also outlines practice guidelines according to the 2010 Equality Act and Building Regulations Approved Document M.
The law states that any service provider must make reasonable adjustments to their institutions before such changes are necessitated. Suitable toilet provision is considered a basic human right under the European Convention of Human Rights.
