Sedum blanket installed to create Waitrose green roof

Bauder‘s bituminous waterproofing sedum blanket has been specified for installation to create a green roof for a new Waitrose superstore.

Located in Bagshot, the new Waitrose superstore includes a number of environmental features. Perhaps the most prominent is its large wave-shaped roof, which accommodates a sea of green vegetation.

The green roof helps to replace the foliage lost to the building’s footprint, whilst minimising its visual impact on the surrounding Surrey landscape.

Bauder’s sedum blanket

Over 4,800 square metres of Bauder’s sedum blanket was installed to achieve the client’s desired level of sustainability. At 2×1 metres, each sedum blanket is pre-cultivated; they are grown and harvested in Britain.

Featuring 120mm FA-TE insulation, the company’s blanket, which is a root-resistant bituminous waterproofing system, ensures compliance with current Building Regulations.

The blanket comprises a total of 11 species of sedums, with a variety of mosses and grasses to ensure plant diversity. This offers rainwater retention, noise absorption and encourages the creation of new wildlife habitats.

Roof system installation

Span Roofing was contracted to carry out the installation: the blankets were craned into position on to the roof and laid in a similar way to turf. An irrigation system was fitted to ensure the plants have access to a sufficient level of water.

To conquer the sheer size of the roof, Span Roofing specified over 1,000 square metres of the sedum blanket for installation each day. This also ensured that all roofing works were completed on time for the store’s opening.
