Wetherby EWI specified for energy efficient flat regeneration

Wetherby’s External Wall Insulation (EWI) has been specified by Wrekin Housing Trust (WHT) for the regeneration of 60 flats in Wellington, Shropshire.

Approximately a third of UK homes have solid walls, according to the National Insulation Association, which estimates that around 45% of heat from these homes could be escaping through the walls.

Grinshill flats were originally built with solid concrete walls and have therefore struggled to retain heat. Wrekin Housing Trust specified Wetherby’s EWI through procurement specialist Fusion21’s ‘Supply of Retrofit and Associated Products’ framework as a cost effect solution that would improve the building’s energy efficiency and appearance.

Wetherby recognised installers Sustainable Building Services (UK) and Hamilton Building Contractors were both awarded the project, which has seen each of the 5 blocks being re-roofed, new windows installed and Wetherby’s EWI system applied to the outside face.

The EpsiTherm insulation consisted of a layer of graphite enhanced EPS insulation board using a thickness of 90mm. Due to the use of graphite, the product offers an enhanced thermal insulation material, making it the ideal cost-effective insulation method.

The system was completed with the application of a brick effect render to the ground floor, followed by a decorative silicone 1.5mm ‘K’ render to the first three floors in white and grey.

The EWI system improved the U-value from 1.74w/m²K to 0.30w/m²K meeting current building regulation requirements and savings as much as £145 per year.
