Fire-resistant glazing specified for Olympic Park media hub

Wrightstyle have supplied specialist fire-resistant glazing from Pyroguard to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics media centre, as part of a major project to transform the building into a new commercial space for the creative and digital industries.

Here East will be a new 1.2 million square foot creative hub situated at the former press and broadcast centres on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. 

The project incorporates three full-height steel curtain wall internal atriums supplied by Wrightstyle.

At a combined size of over 800 metres squared, the Pyroguard glazing features fire resistance of up to 60 minutes of integrity and insulation with a high level of acoustic performance.

Pyroguard T-EI60/25-3 VI is a double-glazed fire resistant glass specifically designed for use in steel profiles. The glass can optionally be combined with counterpanes to offer additional performance characteristics such as solar control, thermal insulation, sound reduction and attack protection.

Wrightstyle also provided a large number of unlatched 6050F1 doors, which integrate seamlessly into the atriums over various levels.

Here East Creative Hub

Here East will form a community of offices, studio spaces and a data centres, as well as new facilities for University College London, Loughborough University and Hackney Community College. In addition, one of the atriums is now part of BT Sport’s new broadcasting centre.

The project was complicated by the need to accommodate sloping head screens and significant vertical and lateral movement due to the building’s size. Wrightstyle designed a specially-welded anti-racking configuration with bespoke brackets to resolve the issue.

The company worked closely with both Lakesmere and Laing O’Rourke, the main contractor, to comply with stringent supply chain management, in addition to training the Lakesmere installation team.

Our advanced glazing systems allow ambient light to flood through the building, removing the more traditional internal walls that the designers saw as being barriers to networking and collaboration.

Simon Ellison, UK Head of Project Sales at Pyroguard, added: “The building-height internal atrium at Here East uses steel-framed curtain walling with Pyroguard fire glass. On the ground floor, there is a subtle continuation of the stunning ‘dazzle camouflage’ frit pattern that wraps around the facade of the building, whilst upper floors mix in black spandrel panels. 

This project demonstrates that the use of fire rated glazing does not require any compromise in terms of design or performance.”
