An SE Controls combined smoke and hybrid natural ventilation system has been specified to protect the residents of Derby’s Sunnyfield development of ‘Extra Care’ flats for over 60s.
Developed by Housing & Care 21, in conjunction with Derby City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, Sunnyfield accommodates 70 self-contained flats, which have been designed to enable independent living for the elderly. An ‘Extra Care’ approach provides additional support, allowing residential access a range of on-site services, amenities and social events.
The 70 flats are located over three stories; access is providing via stairwells, lift shafts and a corridor network.
SE Controls was contracted to upgrade the building’s existing smoke ventilation equipment with an environmental ventilation system.
The fully-automated solution provides fresh air ventilation to the communal corridors on a daily basis; it also works to keep these areas clear of smoke in the event of a fire, when triggered by the installed network of SHEVTEC controllers and temperature sensors.
The sensors and control panels are located in each corridor, the building’s four stairwells and its glazed atrium areas, alongside a series of roof vents and ventilation louvres, to ensure that smoke control and fire safety is maintained at all times.
Whilst its primary function is to provide smoke ventilation, the system works effectively as a natural ventilation system. This allows for the maintenance of comfortable temperatures by eliminating the possibility of overheating in the summer months, whilst simultaneously removing stale air from the building.
