Dulux Trade unveils ‘Denim Drift’ Colour of the Year 2017

  • 12 Sep 2016

Dulux Trade has revealed its 2017 ‘Colour of the Year’ as part of the launch of the annual Colour Futures trend forecast.

Dulux Trade named the versatile grey-blue ‘Denim Drift’ as the must-have colour of 2017, describing it as ‘beautiful and timeless’. The colour, which features a spectrum of blues and blue-hue tones, was chosen by experts at the Dulux Global Aesthetic Centre as one of the key trends for next year.

Life in a new light

The curated trend palettes align with four key colour stories inspired by an overarching theme of ‘life in a new light’: new romanticism, shared individualism, the working home and considered luxury.

As Louise Tod from Dulux Global Aesthetics Centre explains, the overriding theme reflects the ‘increasingly digital world where real and authentic experiences are becoming more important than ever before’.

She elaborated: “As the world changes, people are taking a fresh look at the everyday elements of life – our family and friends, work, connecting with nature, and the pleasure of experiences. We are incredibly excited that ‘Life in a new Light’ is the driving influence for 2017 and is seen in all our colour trends for the year.”

Colour Futures

The Colour Futures launch event took place in a large townhouse in central London. Dulux Trade commissioned artist and designer, Jim Biddulph of Material Lab to bring the theme of ‘life in a new light’ to a commercial audience.

He commented: “Like so many specifiers Colour Futures is an event we always look forward too. The insights into colour and human trends offer us content to work with for the year to follow and to be involved in the launch event is always a pleasure and highly insightful.

Once again we’ve got under the skin of the trends and responded to them with materials that we feel activate the essence of each trend, as well as offering tangible examples of the mouth-watering colours from CF17.”

The event also hosted a panel discussion featuring Oliver Heath of Heath Design; colour psychology expert Karen Haller; Ian Hogarth, director of Hogarth Architects; and Heleen Van Gent, creative director of AkzoNobel.
