VELUX donates Natural Light solar lamps to African communities

After observing the success of its Natural Light solar lamps in Africa, the VELUX Group plans to deliver 20,000 more lamps to support sales agents in off-grid communities, based in Sierra Leone, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The Natural Light project, which was created in collaboration with NGO Plan International and Little Sun, aims to bring a sustainable light source to remote African communities. The provision of ecological and affordable lighting allows citizens to enjoy greater independence, enabling them to cook, study and work safely in the dark.

By replacing their kerosene lanterns, which emit carbon dioxide, with these solar lamps, citizens will begin to see an overall improvement in air quality.

Ultimately, the project intends to bring better living environments to locations outside VELUX’s standard markets.

Natural Light solar lamps in Africa

By employing an entrepreneurial distribution model, VELUX also hopes to create a secure way for local sales agents to earn their living.

So far, the project has been successful: over 50 sales agents, spread throughout Sierra Leone, Zambia and Zimbabwe, now have their own businesses selling Natural Light solar lamps.

Following such a positive uptake in these counties, VELUX made the decision to extend the programme to Malawi. Project participants will be trained as sales agents; they will learn how to sell the Natural Light solar lamps via demonstrations, roleplays, workshops and group work.

The additional 20,000 solar lamps are now ready for distribution.
