New research from Wetherby Building Systems has demonstrated that the widely acknowledged skills gap is showing no sign of abating, whilst plastering seems to be the trade in most demand.
Without enough skilled workers, the year ahead is set to be tough for construction companies competing for new projects.
When questioned, it was revealed that a third of the contractors, consultants, architects and installer revealed that the main challenge affecting current construction projects is a lack of skilled tradespeople. Moreover, with almost three quarters of the industry have admitted that they’ve experienced coming up against a shortage of skilled workers in recent years.
There is clearly a skills gap in the industry, and it is proving vital to increase the number of young people that are joining the sector with a decrease in the number of young people entering the industry over the last five years.
Almost half of young people who were questioned said that newly qualified workers only ever had theoretical understanding, and not practical. Consequently, comprehensive practical training was required to ensure they have the necessary skills, meaning even that even those young people that are coming from the industry are not ready to go straight onto site.
Bob Deane, managing director at Wetherby Building Systems, commented that the evident skills shortage can only be improved by more young people pursuing a career in construction. He believes that training providers, contractors, manufacturers, trade bodies and associations all need to get on board to help educate, train ad employ our next generation of construction professionals.
