Exova BM TRADA develops new CLT training course

  • 13 Feb 2017

Exova BM TRADA, expert training provider, has developed a new training course for spring/summer 2017, following an increase in popularity of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) constructions.

In recent years, CLT has seen a rapid growth as a method of construction, largely due to it’s built in fire resistance, fantastic green credentials and its visually appealing structure. The interest means that more training is required for engineers looking to design with this innovative material.

Exova BM TRADA has identified this knowledge gap and teamed up wit the experts from the ‘home of CLT’ at Graz University in Austria, with the aim of developing a course which explains the basics of CLT design, as well as how to make the most of the product’s benefits and avoid any potential difficulties.

Everything will be covered in the one-day course, from applications and benefits, to member designs, stability, fire, bracing and connections.

The course provides practical information and expert advice and is designed with engineers in mind, but also beneficial for architects, developers, contractors, building inspectors and timber frame manufacturers.

With a number of enquiries being received about CLT training courses, Principal Strcutural Engineer at Exova BM TRADA, Dr Keerthi Ranasinghe commented that the company was extremely fortunate to be able to offer the course with its specialist colleagues in Austria.

He explained that there is incredible potential for the product in Europe, in the mid-rise residential and commercial sectors where steel would usually be specified and it will become an even more popular choice in the future as the industry realises the full potential of CLT.

Dr Alexandra Theil and Professor Reinhard Brandner from Graz University, Austria, will deliver the Cross-Laminated Timber for Engineers course.

The course will cost £399 + VAT or £349 + VAT for TRADA members, and will be held at the following locations:

  • The Institution of Structural Engineers, London – 9 May 2017
  • The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Edinburgh – 11 May 2017
  • The Institution of Structural Engineers, London – 4 July 2017
  • Chancellors, Manchester, 5 July 2017
