The SML below ground drainage system manufactured by Harmer Building Drainage has been supplied to a the UK’s first Canopy by Hilton hotel, sited at The Minories in Aldgate.
Scheduled to open in 2018, the prestigious development is situated close to London’s Roman and medieval city walls and nearby to the East End.
The site features a double storey basement box and podium slab, constructed by contractor A J Morrisroe, to support a 16-storey residential block and a 14-storey hotel extension.
The basement box, which covers a footprint of around 3,500 across a narrow site, required drainage with excellent load bearing strength and durability, making Harmer SML below ground drainage a suitable choice.
The project overcame a number of challenges, as Harmer Drainage’s National Sales Manager, Wayne Willmott, explained: “There were multiple levels of earlier construction to work through, including foundations and piles that date back to the 19th century. And because it’s close to the East End, The Museum of London and 1st Line Defence got involved to establish if there were any WW2 unexploded bombs buried on the site! Definitely not a run-of-the-mill project!”
Harmer’s SML cast iron soil and waste pipes provide a lightweight, dry jointed system that is strong, durable and easy to install. The below ground pipework system is non-combustible and allows for direction connection from soil to drain to sewer. In addition, it comes with BBA certification, Kitemark accreditation and CE Marking conforming to BS EN 877.
