Aggregate Industries supplies aggregates for major airport resurface

Aggregate Industries recently supplied approximately 55,000 tonnes of aggregates to resurface the East Midlands Airport.

The airport was closed for five consecutive weekends while the resurfacing took place on the 2.9km runway. 

Framework contractor Galliford Try appointed surfacing contractor Colas who called on Aggregate Industries to help deliver a high quality service, on time and in full, meeting and exceeding client expectations. Colas procured and established three on-site mobile asphalt plants which were in operation simultaneously to produce the tonnage required.

Its Bardon Hill quarry was able to produce 1,500,000 tonnes of aggregates for surfacing solutions per year and Aggregate Industries delivered a stock-pile of 800-1,000 tonnes per day, every day.

The specialist asphalt material, Beton Bitumeux Aeronautique specified required four different aggregate blends: 11500 tonnes of 8/14mm granite, 9200 tonnes of 6/10mm granite, 10000 tonnes of 3/6mm granite and 13200 tonnes of 0/4mm CRF granite.

Aggregate Industries was able to ensure the vast requirement of this material exceeding the strength, flake and skid values required for the project from its Bardon Hill quarry. One aggregate material was delivered per day, minimising associated risk of loss/contamination on site, while operating a stringent quality procedure. 

The company was located just 13.2 miles away from the airport, allowing for last-minute deliveries and the supply of additional vehicles at short notice. Therefore, this enabled Colas to complete the project ahead of schedule, within just five weekends.
