The former headquarters of the Greater London Council has recently been renovated into a lively complex of hotels, offices and visitor attractions.
The Grade II listed building was built in 1958 and is the main Riverside Building, home to the London Aquarium, London Dungeon as well as the Premier Inn and Marriott Hotels.
In January 2017, London venue company ‘etc.venues’ announced the opening of a conference and event venue in County Hall. Based on the fourth floor features 20 multi-purpose interconnecting spaces containing two river fronting suites for groups of up to 900.
Synergy Architects and Jestico & Whiles were appointed by ‘etc.venues’ as executive and design architects. Acoustic and thermal insulation were required for the project, including careful restoration of the period features.
Selectaglaze were contacts by Synergy Architects to install thermal and acoustic efficient secondary glazing, apart from where there were dado rails, which the conservation officer was keen to retain.
Air needed to be supplied and extracted through the existing windows, as there were no rising ducts of a suitable size. Only windows facing onto the light well or the courtyards could be used, therefore the top panes of most of the windows facing into the light wells were boxed in and used for ventilation openings. Consequently, secondary glazing was only required to the lower part of these windows.
Main contractor KPS Partnership Ltd arranged a successful trial with Selectaglaze samples. Thereafter, Selectaglaze installed a total of 148 secondary glazing units which were a combination of horizontal sliders and lift-out units. Those units exceeding 1600m high were fit with a 6mm toughened low-E glass. A minimum glass to glass cavity of 150mm allowed for optimal noise reduction. All minimum profile and timber grounds were powder coated in a matt grey finish.
The successful installation of secondary glazing has boosted business prospects at ‘etc.venus’, with conference rooms, event suites and bars now providing a warm and peaceful environment to suit any event requirement.
