A director of uPVC window specialists REHAU has said its timber counterparts in the industry may need to re-assess their use of the material.
As reports say that global demand for raw materials is starting to exceed the supply, Gareth Jones, Marketing & Technical Director – Window Solutions at REHAU, has said the timber industry may have to make changes similar to those the PVC industry has faced if they are to survive.
He suggests the future for companies that make doors and frames out of wood may require them to consider new wooden frame designs, which use less raw materials or take advantage of recycled material.
Gareth referred to the similar predicament that PVC has faced previously, whereby taking on board reports that PVC can be recycled up to 10 times in its lifetime meant new polymer use could be significantly reduced.
REHAU’s commitment to sustainability and using its resources more carefully has since expanded over the years in order to future proof the business. It has invested more than €50m in new technology and facilities to ensure that more than half of its products will be made using recycled materials by 2020.
