Scotland’s premier shopping and leisure destination, Glasgow’s Silverburn, is guaranteeing it can be enjoyed by even more people, as it unveils new accessible facilities by Closomat.
The venue has become the latest to open a Changing Places facility, meaning anyone who needs the assistance of a carer for their intimate hygiene now has the requisite facilities to do so.
This allows disabled visitors and their carers to relax, with no need to cut a visit short due to lack of suitable toilet provision.
Provided in addition to conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets, and accessed via RADAR key, the Changing Places provides more space.
With a ceiling track hoist, adult-sized height adjustable changing bench, height adjustable washbasin, shower, and privacy screen; this comprises an integral part of improvements at Silverburn, which include new eco-friendly male and female toilets, a parent & child changing room and a prayer/quiet room.
David Pierotti, Silverburn’s General Manager, said the aim was to want to make an environment where customers can come and shop, and feel at ease, whatever needs they may have.
“Some 20% of Scotland’s population is disabled, so it is important to us to ensure we provide all the facilities necessary to ensure our doors are open to all, hence the addition of the Changing Places,” he said.
Local Changing Places campaginer Laura Rutherford expressed her gratitude for the implementation of the facility, as they now can now enjoy everything that Silverburn has to offer more.
“Without the Changing Places, a trip out like that just isn’t possible,” she said
Under Building Regulations and British Standards, a Changing Places should be provided in any facilities to which vast numbers of the public have access, and/or spend a length of time.
The latest BS8300:2018 specifically details large commercial retail premises as a target location.
